We have talked much about "Oxidative Stress" in this blog and it occurred to us that some of you might not know what that is.
In plain language, Oxidative Stress is the when so-called "free radicals" - chemicals that form when your body's system interacts with oxygen molecules to cause damage to cells, proteins, and DNA. "Oxidation".
Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and many others. The cholesterol plaque that forms in your arteries comes from free radical damage. So does the the plaque that forms around your nervous system cells that is a symptom of cognitive degeneration and Alzheimer's Disease.
They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage. If you think of about it - cholesterol buildup, cognitive degeneration, wrinkly skin - and other indicators of aging are all caused by free radical damage.
Your body is under constant attack from oxidative stress. Oxygen in the body splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, called free radicals, seeks out other electrons so they can become a pair.
Substances that generate free radicals can be found in the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe and the water we drink. These substances include fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides and air pollutants.
The nutrition industry is rife with products that claim to fight oxidative stress and free radicals. This is why you will often see "Antioxidants" in product labels.
Scientific studies have shown that fulvic and humic acids are effective anti-oxidants. We discussed some of this in a previous post.
Our very own AEON is a pure extract of fulvic which could mean that is it even more effective in that role than more traditional sources of fulvic acids like shilajit.
The exact chemical mechanism hasn't yet been determined conclusively, but scientists are starting to believe that fulvic and humic acids help in the removal of free radicals and other toxic substances like heavy metals using a chemical reaction called "chelation".
Chelation – in plain language – is when an organic substance like fulvic and humic acids, interact with inorganic substances (like heavy metals such as lead) and combine to make a new substance (a "chelate"). In terms of fulvic and humic acids's beneficial effects - this new combined "chelated" substance is then drawn away and safely disposed by your body's natural defence system and your digestive system.
You essentially eliminate these toxins and free radicals naturally - thereby reducing oxidative stress. One study describes reaction as "scavenging" by fulvic acids. Fulvic acid has the highest potential antioxidant effect of any readily available substance and thus the best "scavenger" of substances that cause oxidation.
Since aging is defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage, mitigating these reactions could have a profound, holistic anti-aging effect.Do you have questions about this post? Or about AEON? Follow us on Facebook and Instagram (@true.aeon) and leave us a note.
